Behind the Blue Line: Mapping the Experiences of Adirondack Conservation Workers

Behind the Blue Line is a collection of exploratory maps that investigates the experiences of conservation workers in the Adirondack region of New York State in the mid to late twentieth century. This project also showcases the execution of conservation efforts behind the legislative decisions that have determined environmental policy in the Adirondacks during the 20th century and brings attention to the current environmental concerns faced by the region.  To execute this project I developed a prototype for an interactive digital map to showcase stories from conservation workers in the Adirondacks. Donald R. Waful: The Remarkable Life Story of a Local Syracusan

I met Don as a college Freshman and found the story of his experience as a prisoner of war during World War II amazing. Don was eager to share his stories from the war as well as the remarkable life he led in the years following. Together, we began documenting his life story through interviews. After receiving a grant through the Presidential Scholars Program at SUNY Potsdam, I curated an exhibit about Don’s life in collaboration with the Onondaga Historical Association in Don’s home town of Syracuse. The exhibit opened in April of 2018 and closed in January 2020. Click here to read more.
