Local History at all Levels: Making Collections Relatable and Accessible – “Shaping DH to Meet the Skills and Needs of a Rural Community”
The needs of any particular community are diverse and uniquely grounded in the history of the people who live there, both past and present. Digital collections and projects offer an opportunity both to present local history to audiences who might otherwise be unable to access physical collections, and also offer new ways to collaborate with the many different types of communities that a local-oriented cultural institution serves. In this panel you will hear from three cultural heritage professionals working both in digital collections and local history: Mahala Nyberg
will discuss the ways she adapted her ideas of virtual engagement while working in rural communities and increased digital access despite technical limitations and lack of digital literacy among users. Read full description here.

“Shaping DH to Meet the Skills and Needs of a Rural Community”
Can you do DH in a region where broadband internet is a futuristic dream? What about digital outreach in a community where social media, and even email, can be an unfamiliar tool to some? The answer is yes! But, it may look a little different than what we digital humanists are used to. In this session, I discuss the ways in which I, along with my co-workers at the OSHM, built our digital presence and interpretation over the past year to adapt to a world with COVID-19, while still addressing the needs and capabilities of our community.
